Converting a legacy mailbox

If you have old mailboxes with randomly generated names like "pop12345", you can convert them to e-mail accounts, which are named by their e-mail address. E-mail accounts are easier to remember and easier to manage.

Converting a mailbox to an e-mail account

Unlike the old mailbox naming convention of the letters "pop" followed by five numbers, e-mail account names are full e-mail addresses, so they're easier to remember. You can use your e-mail address to log in to WebMail and other e-mail software, and it's no longer necessary to keep track of what each mailbox is used for.

We strongly recommend converting all your old numbered mailboxes to e-mail accounts.

Converting a mailbox preserves all existing e-mail, WebMail preferences, address books, and forwarding settings.

To convert a legacy mailbox to an e-mail account, follow these steps.

  1. Log in as owner using your account number and its password.
  2. Click the "Manage mailboxes" link under the "E-mail" category tab.
  3. Select the user name of the hosting package under which the mailbox was created. Select the "Convert your old mailboxes to the new format" option and click "Next".
  4. Select the mailbox you wish to convert and click "Next".
  5. Select the e-mail address you wish to use as the name of the new e-mail account, and click "Next" to proceed with converting the mailbox.
  6. If you use e-mail software such as Microsoft Outlook to read your mail, update the account properties in your e-mail software to use the e-mail address as the mail account user name, instead of the old mailbox name.
Note: some mailboxes cannot be converted automatically. If the mailbox cannot be converted automatically, AMS will provide you with additional information and instructions for manually converting the mailbox.
