How to use WebMail

Your account includes web-based e-mail for sending and receiving e-mail from any computer with a web browser.

Initial WebMail setup

  1. Create an e-mail account using Control Panel. The e-mail account will store your incoming mail. Make a note of the e-mail account password provided to you when you create the account.
  2. Browse to the WebMail login screen. In the "Account name" field, enter the e-mail address of the account you created, and in the "Password" field, enter the password provided to you in the first step. Click the "Log in" button.
  3. When you first log in to your new account, you will be asked to fill in your name, and the e-mail address you would like people to see when they receive mail from you. By default, this will be the e-mail address of the account you created, but you can also use any other valid address. Click "Submit" when you have entered your information.

Storage limits

Each e-mail account you create has a storage limit of 100 MB. When the storage limit has been reached, no new mail will be accepted for that e-mail account, and a message will be sent to the sender indicating that your e-mail account is full. The contents of all folders in your e-mail account counts toward the storage limit.

You can monitor your e-mail account space usage by checking the bar graph in the top left corner of the screen, by clicking the "Folder Sizes" button, or by using AMS Control Panel.

Message folders

The "Folders" link in the top menu allows you to create folders in your INBOX if you wish to organize your mail. Messages placed in these folders will be visible only through the webmail system, or other IMAP e-mail software (such as Outlook Express when configured to use the IMAP protocol). They will not be visible through POP3 e-mail software.

The webmail system will automatically create three special folders in your INBOX: Drafts, Sent, and Trash.

The "Drafts" folder

The Drafts folder is used to store temporary copies of messages which have been postponed during composition. To resume a postponed message, view it and click the "Resume Draft" link above the Subject line.

The "Sent" folder

The Sent folder contains copies of messages you have sent through the webmail system, including attachments. Because these messages will be counted in your 100 MB e-mail account storage limit, you are strongly advised to purge your Sent folder regularly, or to disable the storage of sent mail by clicking "Options - Folder Preferences".

The "Trash" folder

The Trash folder contains messages you have chosen to delete. This allows you to recover accidentally deleted messages before they are permanently removed from the system. To empty the Trash folder, click the "(purge)" link next to the Trash folder in the folder list. Note that the system will also periodically purge your Trash folder. Any message you move to the Trash folder will be subject to removal at any time.

Archiving e-mail messages

To archive and download your e-mail messages before permanently deleting them from the server, click a folder name in the left hand pane, and follow these steps.
  1. If it's displayed, click the "Show All" link near the top of the screen to show all the messages in this folder.
  2. Check the box next to each message you wish to archive, or click the "Select All" link near the top of the screen to archive every message in this folder.
  3. Click the "Archive" button near the bottom of the screen. You are prompted to save the archived folder to your computer. The folder is a compressed ZIP file.
  4. Click the "Delete" button to delete the selected messages that you've just archived.
  5. Click the "Purge" link next to the "Trash" folder in the left hand pane.

To view the messages later, you can unzip the file you downloaded, and drag and drop the messages into Outlook, Outlook Express, or Windows Mail.
