Why can't I see my website?
Because of the nature of Internet traffic, the domain name system, and the
occasionally unreliable behaviour of users' software, your website may be inaccessible for
many possible reasons unrelated to your hosting service at Korax.
Discovering the best method of solving this problem
There are many reasons why your website may not be visible from your location
at any particular time, most of which are not related to your hosting service at Korax.
The best way to solve this problem is to troubleshoot networking and domain name
scenarios first. This help article will help you with solving the most likely cause
of this issue.
- There may be a network problem on the Internet between you and Korax
- Your computer or other equipment may need to be restarted
- Your domain name may not have been moved to Korax
- Your domain name registration may have expired
- You may have uploaded your website to the wrong location
- Your web hosting service may have expired
- There may be scheduled maintenance on the server hosting your website
1. There may be a network problem on the Internet between you and Korax
The Internet works because many different networks are linked together to pass information
between one location and another. Sometimes, a network along the way may be having problems,
and information, such as your request to view your website, may not be able to travel past
that point. This is unrelated to your Internet provider or Korax.
Fortunately, you can view the network responses along a route between two points.
This way, you can pinpoint where problems may be arising. A utility called "traceroute"
lets you do this. Read
Using traceroute
to learn how to effectively troubleshoot network issues.
2. Your computer or other equipment may need to be restarted
Many miscellaneous computer problems, or errors with networking equipment such as DSL
routers, are solved by restarting your equipment. If you find that you suddenly can't
see your website, try restarting your computer, and/or resetting your Internet connection. This is a common problem easily
solved. It has nothing to do with your service, your website, or the Internet at
large, but usually has to do with the software on your computer.
3. Your domain name may not have been moved to Korax
You may not have updated your domain name's DNS server information, or enough time
may not yet have elapsed in order for your website to be completely visible from
every point on the Internet.
Update your domain name's DNS server information to use Korax' name servers. Once
you have done this, allow up to forty-eight hours for the name server changes to propagate
completely across the Internet.
4. Your domain name registration may have expired
Your domain name registration service is separate from your web hosting service.
Both are usually paid at different times. Additionally, your registration may have
been paid for at a different company than Korax.
You are always alerted about pending domain name expiries by e-mail at the address
contained in your domain name's contact record. If this information is not kept up
to date, you may not receive the e-mail notice. If your domain name expires before
you renew it by paying for another registration period, it stops functioning. This
is true for domain names sold by all registration service providers, including Korax.
Any service you may be using your domain name for, including e-mail or web hosting,
will therefore stop functioning, even if you have paid for those services separately.
If your domain name was originally registered at Korax, you can renew it by paying for
another registration period. You should be able to do this at any other registration
service provider as well. As soon as the domain name is renewed, it will start functioning
again.
5. You may have uploaded your website to the wrong location
If you use FTP to transfer files to your website, make sure you upload your web pages
to the web document folder.
When you connect directly to your FTP account without specifying a start folder, you are
placed in your account's home directory. Don't upload your files here. Instead, look for
a folder with the same name as your website, such as
www.example.com.
This is where your files must be placed in order for your website to be visible.
6. Your web hosting service may have expired
For customers with prepaid services, you are always alerted about pending web hosting
service expiries by e-mail at the address of the billing contact role that's attached to
your account. If this information is not kept up to date, you may not receive the e-mail
notice. If your web hosting service expires before you renew it by paying for another
period, it stops functioning.
You can restart your service by making a payment for another period.
7. There may be scheduled maintenance on the server hosting your website
Occasionally, Korax system administration staff do overnight maintenance on servers
to upgrade hardware or software. This is not a regular occurrance, and we notify
customers about upcoming system maintenance at this website. You can check
the announcements page to rule out any maintenance
issues related to Korax.
